Dyssynergic defecation

Dyssynergic defecation is a condition where the muscles in the pelvic floor and anus do not coordinate properly during bowel movements. This can lead to symptoms like constipation, difficulty emptying the bowels, and hard or lumpy stool.

Dyssynergic defecation biofeedback therapy is a treatment that uses sensors and visual feedback to retrain the muscles involved in defecation and improve their coordination. Here's how it works:

During biofeedback therapy sessions, sensors are placed on the patients anus and rectum to detect muscle activity. The patient is then asked to attempt to have a bowel movement while watching feedback on a computer monitor.

This visual feedback shows the patient when the right muscles are contracting and relaxing at the proper times during defecation. It also shows when there is a lack of coordination that is causing symptoms.

With the help of a therapist or nurse, the patient then practices exercises and techniques to improve thetiming, strength and duration of muscle contractions. They learn how to relax certain muscles while squeezing others in the correct sequential pattern for effective bowel movements.

Over multiple sessions spanning weeks to months, patients can retrain their pelvic floor and anal sphincter muscles through biofeedback-assisted exercise. This improved coordination often significantly relieves symptoms of constipation from dyssynergic defecation.
